The welfare state arises from the attempt to do good with other people's money. Such attempts always fail because: Nobody spends somebody else's money as carefully as his own. Welfare is supply driven. Those spending the money use force to collect it and to insure those receiving it use it for "right" purposes. Good intentions are corrupted by bad means. Friedman visits U.S. and Britain.

  • I think you should consider that concept of the standard of living of the worker going down. Today's every day items of the working people were the toys of the rich only a short time ago. Indoor plumbing, air conditioning, cell phones, televisions, automoblies, washing machines, etc. The standard of living has been skyrocketing in the US and the world for hundreds of years.

  • I reject the premise that there is a "free market" for ordinary working people. What we have is a Coercive Market. In a Coercive Market the earning power of work and the standard of living of workers declines, while those with economic power gain an ever more unbalanced share of the nation's wealth. Those who preach the virtues of "the free market" should be the first to recognize that a Coercive Market is as certain to be destructive as a genuine free market is presumed to be healthy!
