Yoga pose headstand can be beneficial for some people, however, it can be dangerous for others if precautions are not taken into consideration while performing this yoga pose. It is shocking that Yoga legend BKS Iyengar ill advised yoga practitioners in his book "Light of yoga" to put all the pressure on their head and use arms and shoulder only for balancing purpose in headstand. I would strongly suggest every yoga beginners against this idea of MR Iyengar for many reasons.

  • BKS Iyengar's method has evolved significantly since "Light on Yoga". We are taught to bear 50% of the weight on the arms in Sirsasana. He has disciples in their 60s and 70s that are balancing on their heads for 30 minutes daily. In fact at 92 he still continues to practice headstand. Iyengar yoga is very methodical, and the teaching is constantly growing.
