  • This horn has an F crook on it, right? What's the deal? Great hornist by-the-way

    My teacher told me how to play all the notes on Natural (Since it is part of my training, being classical hornist) The hand positions aren't THAT HARD, but it sure is still a hell to switch them with haste, specially on big intervals. I myself can't play like that due to Dystonia on my hand. But I know the theory, and it is rather fun to play that way :) (Tho I admit cheating few times with hand stops because I was too lazy to fine tune my valves )

  • @Deathwish42 Or, like playing a valved one without changing fingerings. A modern valved double horn is basically twelve natural horns built into one instrument, and changing fingerings is like changing crooks. To simulate natural horn you have to think, "How long of a break in the music do I need to change crooks? If I don't have at least that much time between passages, then I'm not allowed to change fingerings."

  • @moogle301 No, a non valved instrument only has so many notes that it can play. Playing a natural horn is just like playing a valved one with out using the valves.

  • I used to play Trumpet but now I'm out of practice so I'd prefer an instrument that you play by instinct and not with valves so I can just think of a song and play it. Is the bugle like that? Cus I can play most any tune on a trumpet mouthpiece but obviously that sounds a bit stupid, and doesn't work once it's attached to the trumpet, then I can only control jumps between C and G and E with my mouth.

  • He's very good, but I think he needs to have more of a balance between the notes. I understand that a lot of notes are hard to play, but the Ab is not one of them. It's way too muter. He should be using a combination of lip and hand stopping to achieve a more "clear" Ab. Other than that, he's decent.

  • @JasonHouston77 The crookless horns were around but you needed to own 6 or 7 in order to play in the different keys. Crooks make life a lot eaiser.

  • @JasonHouston77 Nope, you have to have a crook in order to set the horn in some key. The design he is using can't be played without a crook. Some have the crooks on the end, some in the middle.

  • OK FYI: Natural horn is that kind of horn that Konstantin Timokhine plays in this vid, looks almost exactly like a regular horn, but without keys. Hunting horns consisted of a big loop of tubing, large enough to be fitted around the torso of a man (which was the way they were carried on hunt) and a bell that was smaller than that of modern french horns.

    Hunting horns were very loud and brassy though, so the natural horn is an adaption for horn playing indoors.

  • And in my comments I never gave credit where credit is due. The way he switches from stopped to unstopped between sixteenth notes is just amazing. The Concert Rondo is a hard piece to begin with. I found it to be more difficult than any of Mozart's other horn solos.

  • When I said they didn't have crooks some years before that, I was thinking back to when I learned about the development of the instrument and how the crooks were added before the time of Mozart and they had nothing but a horn before that. As for whether it was called a natural horn or a hunting horn before crooks, you seem to know better than I.

  • this is amazing, that guy has some serious talent. I am playing this solo on an F horn, but i wish i could play it on a natural horn, this is absolutely amazing but i wish it had the ending

  • Okay, well I thought that since someone gave me a thumb down, I must have had misunderstood.

    I actually did not know that natural horn ever was played without crooks though. I know that they wrote pieces for hunting horn in certain keys because of the difficulties (or rather, impossibilities) of playing hunting horn in different keyes, did they do that for the natural horn too?

  • No you're exactly right. I'm pretty rusty and forgot that they had to play with one because Mozart wrote in keys that required it. Some years before that, they didn't have crooks though.

  • It does not depend on the player, but on the key of the piece.
