Boris Johnson is the epitomy of loyalty. What a man !! A credit to his family, to his education, and to his party. Well done.

I'm not sure if that's saying that property is paramount to democracy, but I'd have to disagree if that was the case. Cheers for that, a pint sounds goood. I'm academically inclined in that I look into politics, but I'd rather be seen as a realist, as I'm more for going to parliament to pass laws to make working class people's lives easier rather than debate philosophically about the pros and cons of monarchy etc

Of coure, but within government this is either conflict of interests or outright corruption, both punishable. Outside government its perfectly legal and legitimate. And prices can be hiked of course, but would make the government that did it alot less electable (ergo a more democratic system than a private company running it as only their shareholders have a say, and they always vote for more personal profit).

well when it comes to road taxes i understand it'd be much fairer if funds went back into infrastructure, but there are more vital areas (healthcare) where i wouldnt mind a bit of road revenue going. thing is we can't really see the govt's books for this...

"It is only the state that can secure a monopoly"...not intending to start a huge discussion, but bluntly put, no. Either through aggresive market policy or simply through the idea that size counts (larger companies can buy in bulk or whatever to provide cheaper services/goods), monoploies can easily form within the "free" market. Government can prevent this with equality measures in effect making the "free" market less free in the eyes of some and more free in the eyes of others

To be honest the best way to keep fares low is to nationalise public transport, removing the greed factor (no massive inefficiency with CEOs creaming off profits into their pay packages, all profit is reinvested) and increasing efficiency due to having one big system rather than lots of little independent ones.
Cheap populism is unsustainable tax cuts for the wealthy, ethical populism is giving the people what they need (cheap reliable basic transport)

They can raise prices if they already have a monopoly (not exactly a local alternative to buses, unless rickshaws count). I implied that "market forces" are an excuse for abuses of th system, which they frequently are.
I'd rather focus on public transport before city centre cars...not got oodles of sympathy for people driving bmws to the front door of work. But yes to income, high VAT is nooot good.
@HigherPoker That's where you're wrong. He is actually more smart than people give him credit for (as you can see here where he literally makes Paxman speechless). Do not confuse eccentricity for stupidity.
