it's very simple. He use components. Just klick with your right mouse on your object and take "make components". Than you have this effekt

youtube is part of google!! i think that there is a reason why google sped it up so much, which is, of course, that people wont be bored by those videos!!
At 4:33,the two component halves are joined and the separation line dissapears...how do you do this? Please help, my fellow Sketch-up modelers!!

You'll see in the moments before that I am making a selection of just separation lines. You simply hide those lines to make them disappear without actually deleting geometry.
A good way to select those edges it to turn perspective off and choose a side or front view. This lets you make a thin selection set, then hide from the 'Edit' menu. Hope this helps, the video does go very fast.
