In the mid 1990s a group of train enthusiasts formed NMSLRHS for the express purpose of restoring the 2926 to full running condition. At about 10:30 in the morning on June 23, 2000, the giant drive wheels rolled for the first time in forty years, as the 2926 was towed out of the park. This began a two-year pirouette, as the Society moved her about twelve blocks to their newly established "World Headquarters", as the restoration site is called, at 8th and Haines Streets. At the World Headquarters, a group of dedicated volunteers is performing the challenging tasks associated with putting the 2926 back in full running order. Assembly of the tender is complete, some work, wiring and piping still to do. Attention has been turned to the locomotive itself. The powerful chugging of steam-driven wheels and the lonesome wail of a steam whistle will once again haunt the rails of central New Mexico

  • Ive visited their facility a few times and they are working very hard to restore this locomotive.

Sadly, the new mexico centennial came around and the engine still needs years worth of work.

  • @Rtchugg Well, the locomotive L&N 1966 was scrapped half a century ago, but the locomotive's tender still exists, so I thought it would make for a good candidiate for an auxiliary water tender for ATSF 2926.

  • @dragonpullman L&N tenders for the Emma's should be restored to L&N glory!

  • @HaloCE14 I heard that they are actually considering running it on a doubleheader with 3751 when the 2926 is done. So that just might happen some day.

  • I wonder whats going to happen to ATSF #5021 and ATSF #2925 I hope they get restored too.

  • @HaloCE14 Yes, 2926 will be the largest running 4-8-4 in the US or even the world when she is finished. She also will be one of the largest, or the largest, running non-articulated steam locomotives in the USA. I think the 2900 class northerns were the heaviest, longest, and most efficent (sorry, I don't think that I spelled it right) northerns ever built.

  • @HaloCE14 I live in Albuquerque. I saw 2926 in December and they're making good progress. The NMSLRHS hopes to finish her for the New Mexico centennial in 2012.

  • Hmm... if they ever decide that they need an extra water tank, they could purchase the tender from L&N 1966 (a 2-8-4) and convert it into an extra water tank for this locomotive.

  • @HaloCE14 Seeing a double header with 2926 & 3751 would be... unbelievably amazing!

  • When that is restored, it is going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest 4-8-4 under steam.
