Got back August 6th 2009 from Philmont. I'm crew leader for 725-X #32 there were 13 of us from our troop
It was amazing, im also working on a video log like this for my troop as well

Man I wish my scoutmaster let us bring video cameras

I am very thankful to watch this video. I worked at Philmont during the summers of 97, 98 and 99. Being a Philmont Ranger is one of my best chapters in life.

when we had our chuckwagon dinner it had beans it it and i am alergic to peanuts and beans and stuff like that so guess what i Had, A big juicy STEAK! Yeah it was good after 11 days of crap food. Also i sat next to the kid that really loved food, very funny, he was begging like a dog.
all i have been doing lately is looking at philmont videos on youtube! im leaving to go there july 1st! im getting so excited!

I hope you have a great time! I just checked my trip journal from last year and one year ago today we hiked from Ring Place to Rich Cabins. After spending four days in the dusty, windy Valle Vidal, Rich Cabins was a very, very refreshing change. And the next day we were back in Philmont proper. (Hooray!)
I still have hours of video tape from last year's trip. Maybe I'll get around to editing soon? Sutter's Mtn Bike Crash and Baldy Mtn Soulja Boy are the only 2008 clips I have on YouTube.

I'm afraid I probably can't offer much advice, except "don't be afraid". You won't be the first "beginner" at Philmont -- they have hundreds of rookies arrive every day! (I've only been there once myself.)
You will have a Philmont Ranger hiking with you and camping with you and training your crew for the first few days on the trail. Then he/she will leave you to make it on your own. Just make sure everyone pays attention while your Ranger is still with you.

I'm also going in about 10 days.
What contingent are you? (a number like "609K1" - "6" for June, "09" for June 9th)
What trek are you on? This is a number like Trek #7, Trek #16, etc.
I am going to be in crew 609 something (our first day at Philmont will be June 9), and we're on Trek 21 -- 75 miles, including Baldy, but later in the Trek for us.
I'm with Troop 78 from Eaton OH.
I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend hiking poles for everybody! Even cheap ones are only $15/pair at WalMart.
