My dog eating his meal of raw beef. The raw diet...'tis awesome! My dogs certainly thinks so.
------------------------------------------------------
The raw diet is, IMO, the healthiest option to feed a dog, but it takes much more effort than feeding kibble. There's looking for good deals on meat, cutting it to a size so that it's only 2%-4% of the dog's body weight, feeding a variety, and feeding organs. It's also kinda gross in a way, but I enjoy messing with the raw meat, so...
Before EVER feeding this diet to your dog, make sure to do a lot of research first so you will know what you are doing. And there is a lot of controversy on this wonderful diet too, so be sure to read up on both sides.
Oh yes, and I feed beef with a bone in it in this video. It is generally not wise to feed the weight-bearing bones from large animals as they can damage your dog's teeth. But my dog is a careful chewer, so I let him knaw on the weight-bearing bones just a bit, then take them away.

  • How do you manage to keep all the blood and slime and stuff off his fur? Does he ever end up smelling like lamb or beef like my dog did when I fed her raw?

  • He prefers to keep his paws off of the food unless he needs to hold it down. He does get some slime on him sometimes, but he licks it off. Though, sometimes when it gets on the hairs around his neck he can't reach it, so I end up cleaning him. Recently, I decided to fashion him a "snood", some cloth that goes around his neck to prevent his fur from getting icky. I also started wiping his face n stuff off with a paper towel after his meals.

As for the smell, I haven't noticed any meatish aroma.

  • @Boboua Do you have dog crates? Because if you have crates, then, crate the dog while he/she eats, wait until completely done....Will be very very small possibility of being unsanitary, and the dog WILL lick everything up. Then, if you are still a lil worried, a 50/50 White Vinegar and Water mixture spritzed on the crate and then wiped off should remove any remaining germs.

  • Thanks for the reply. I guess our dog is just a messy eater.

We have small children at home too and the dog goes in their beds and share their food so I think feeding raw then letting kids handle the dogs is a bit unsanitary. If our dog ate neatly that wouldn't be a problem :(
