What the hell are you talking about? The American League had the designated hitter rule. Willie Stargell still would have been able to bat at the plate. It's the pitchers, in the designated hitter games of the AL, that are not allowed to bat at the plate.

The real story about that is that Steve Nicosia saw a fan steal my uncles hat and which is why my uncle is looking around without a hat on at the 0:45 mark. Nicosia got the hat back and it promptly made it's way to the HOF that night.
