- During the war in the Pacific, Rabaul was caught in between Japanese and Allied forces. Land and sea are littered with the remains of places, ships, arms, ammunition. The reefs that are elaborately decorated with fan worms also harbor the frame of Black Jack, a B-17, one of the famous Flying Fortresses, that was lost while returning from a raid on Rabaul on July 11, 1943.
