I noticed some people asking for these chords, and I wanted to play this one myself, so:

here, it's tuned down a FULL step to DGCFAD low to high. (this is down two frets)

(also my strings need replacing, so I'm a little out of tune in the vid)

Chord progression is:
E maj

A5 (here this is just strings 3&4 in the 2nd fret)

E maj (in the video I just pull-off string 3 from the 2nd fret to the 1st...because the way I strum on an up stroke I don't really hit string 5, i.e. I was lazy and it really didn't make much of difference)

B5 (string 3&4 in the 4th fret, 5 in the 2nd)

As far as strumming goes, you'll notice Chris A. doesn't play the second E maj during the verses, he elects to play through it with the A5. He only uses the second E maj during the chorus and breaks.

  • wrong way to play the intro you should be dowon on like the 5th frett

  • check out the vid by Alvarado8076 that this was a reply to.

And read the video info. It's in a different key than Petty's original album release. The guitar is NOT in standard tuning.

  • it is in standard tuning its just hes not doing it in the right place.

  • Um...no dude. I tuned it down to DGCFAD. Just like I said I did in the vid description.

  • actually ....if you watch the concert dvd from gainsville fla, youll see hes in standard tuning with a capo in the 1st fret ......playing these same chords ...sorry .......you tune up a step .......check it out

  • That sounds like the John Mayer version not the Tom Petty version.

  • pretty cool but can u sing it????

    :)

  • more like performance than how to play. best version of this s ong so far.

  • is that an epiphone special edition because mine looks just like that.

  • The whole point is that the guitar is PURPOSELY tuned down, in a different key.

He doesn't need a capo because the guitar is tuned the way he wants it.

  • you can only go up with a capo not down

  • no he dosn't need a copo because he tuned his guitar down a step!!!!!!!
