The early Muslims are credited with inventing distillation and could distil just about anything - from alcohol to perfume. Hygiene is very important in the Muslim world so they invented and manufactured soap - centuries before the West - and hundreds of bathhouses were built throughout Muslim cities. They understood the fundamentals of light and how we see, and gave us the camera obscura. They invented algebra and worked out the angle of the tilt of the earth. They built the first windmill, pioneered the concept of the crank rod, and designed the first ever torpedo. Muslim creativity also led to the invention of a unique instrument called the astrolabe -- it could find the direction of Mecca, tell the time and, with the help of the stars, navigate you across deserts and oceans. But perhaps most important of all they pursued the cause of knowledge, translating and preserving the works of the ancients and building the world's largest libraries -- their 'houses of wisdom'.

The muslim scientist really deserve a lot of credit. I really don't think muslims are given near enough credit for their contributions to society. Unfortunatily a few have high jacked the religion and given it a bad reputation.

The Muslims have not invented anything but a suicide belt. When the rest of the world is aiding mankind, the muslims destroy it. They have nothing to claim, but hatred and destruction.

Doesn't make alot of difference to me. In both cases, most inventions came out of Iraq. Most brilliant Arab scientists were Mesopotamian/Iraqis.

Alcohol is not an Arabic word, it's Sumerian.

Algebra is not an Arabic word, it's Babylonian.

An astrolabe (Greek: ἁστρολάβον astrolabon 'star-taker') is a historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers, navigators, and astrologers. Its many uses include locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars; determining local time given local latitude and vice-versa; surveying; and triangulation.

In the medieval Islamic world, they were introduced by Eastern Christian scholars.

I guess that is why it is given a greek name!

Soap is not from Muslims:

As far back as 2500 B.C., clay tablets from near the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers (today known as southern Iraq) were found that make mention of the use of soap. It's use for washing did not necessarily come first. It was first used as a way to dress one's hair, or as a medicament on wounds.

Early types of distillation were known to the Babylonians in Mesopotamia (in what is now Iraq) from at least the 2nd millennium BC, while Islam only came out in the 7th century.

This vid another perfect example of the Muslims claiming something is from them when it is not. Muslims are best a stealing intellectual property and calling it their own.

Facts remain the same...distillation is not from Muslims, since they didn't even exist when distillation was invented.

Yup, you're in the peace club too:). Atleast most Atheists are. With Christians, Muslims and Athiests there's always examples of people who aren't peaceful, but we shouldn't see them as representing the whole group. I side with people who share my values rather then people who share my demographics. The truth is I believe in god, but I don't believe non christians are going to hell. I don't think the belief is as important as the values.
