DemocracyNow.org -
This week Republicans unveiled a budget proposal for 2012 that cuts more than $5.8 trillion in government spending over the next decade. Democracy Now! interviews Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, who addresses the growing class divide taking place in the United States and inequality in a new Vanity Fair article titled "Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%."

Stiglitz is a professor at Columbia University and author of numerous books, most recently, "Freefall: America, Free Markets, and the Sinking of the World Economy."

"It's not just that the people at the top are getting richer," Stiglitz says. "Actually, they're gaining, and everybody else is decreasing... And right now, we are worse than Old Europe."

  • It's interesting how different the conversation is with actual economists than politicians. Stiglitz may or may not have ideological, partisan opinions, but he is at least is able to offer an occasional sentence without cliches, talking points and pseudo-religious, patronising baby talk.

  • @SimplyGimpy Not to mention the interviewers actually let the man speak and let him speak for more than just a 2 minute easy sound bite.

  • Joseph Stiglitz, thank you. What about our current situation about our economy and the mass media?

  • @SimplyGimpy ur VERY right on the cliches and talking points. He never goes like "ohh common sense" or "ohh get REAL," its 100% evidence from economists and 100% rhetoric from politicians

  • Love this guy, real talk

  • Professor Stiglitz, great perspective as always.

  • NEVER VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN AGAIN! The PAUL RYAN BUDGET PLAN will DESTROY MEDICARE for those of us 54 years or younger. IMAGINE being an old man and having to do BATTLE with a PRIVATEinsurance company BECAUSE THE voucher you got is not enough to pay for the coverage you need or you just can't get the coverage you need for your illness! REPUBLICONS slipped this into their budget proposal with+NO+DISCUSSION+OR DEBATE! TELL YOUR STATE REPUBLICON$ THAT YOU WILL NEVER VOTE FOR A REPUBLICON AGAIN!

  • I dont agree that there should be a mortgage tax deduction. He talks about falling home prices as if that's a bad thing. Gee, imagine the day where people could buy houses without a mortgage, that would just be terrible. This guy is well intentioned but misinformed.

  • @saasaasaa010101

I think Obama is the biggest and best liar most people have ever seen. I hope Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura run, wouldn't that be something!

  • I never voted for Obama and never will. From day 1 since he announced he was running he was glib to the many but vague to those who actually pay more closer attention. I knew from then he would be exactly what he is right now.
