Here is a great "Do It Yourself" grid modification that will make your life soooo much easier and you can do with either a store bought grid or a grid you made yourself.

All it takes is a $1.97 pack of pony tail elastics from one of your local big box stores and about 60 seconds of your time.

This great idea was not mine, all credit goes to David Hobby over at Strobist.com, by far the best photography blog on the internet.

Thank you Mr. Hobby.

  • The grid I used for the demonstration of the David Hobby "hack" was a David Honl "store bought" grid.

  • First, no need to apologize.

Second, it (the grid) will focus the light in the direction the flash and grid is pointed and will minimize light from spilling anywhere except where you want it.

    Hope that helps.

  • so I suppose this only works if you keep the flash in a 90 degree state

  • So smart and easy! Nice one!

  • sorry but still don't get it :(

  • @digitalmunky thanks (:

    ive got it now

Think of the grid as a cluster/bunch of little tubes all stacked together. The tubes act to channel the light in a much straighter line than if you use no grid at all... The size/shape of the holes/tubing and length all work together to determine the pattern of light you focus on your subject.

  • Thanks for this video and all the videos on your channel! They are very helpful!!

  • Curious (and sorry if this has been asked) but where did you find the actual black plastic holder for the grid? it looks great! Nice videos...thank you.

  • how does the grid effect the flash???

    sorry... noobie :P
