The Joseph Baker in question was reputedly a great runner in the English county of Chester. From a 1978 LP on the Green Linnet label, 'Mick Moloney with Eugene O'Donnell'.
With apologies for the snaps, crackles, and pops. I was amazed this vinyl album hadn't disintegrated entirely! ;)
Mick Moloney - vocals, guitar, bouzouki
Shelley Posen - concertina, vocals
Joe McKenna - uilleann pipes
Eugene O'Donnell - fiddle
The only problem with this 'old Cheshire folk song' is that I wrote it in 1970 & recorded it in 1971. It is based on an old tale & a traditional tune. Sean Cannon (Dubliners) learned it from me & passed it on to the Irish folk scene, which is how Mick Moloney got hold of it. The song is copyright to me & published by Backshift Music (me). Mick Moloney also knows this & so did Green Linnet Label, which went bust, years ago, owing royalties to a lot of other artists. Pete Coe.

Sorry, Pete. I've removed the note on the origin of the song. Regards

Thanks for posting this! As you say, it is an old Cheshire folk song. I'm from an adjoining county (Staffordshire) & remember singing this at school many years ago.
