The Latin Vulgate, as translated by Jerome circa 400 A.D., had such an overpowering dominance for over a thousand years that many subsequent versions of the Bible, especially the King James Version (KJV), simply carried forward the translation and interpretation errors to varying degrees in support of the doctrine of hell.
It was Jerome who mistranslated and misinterpreted important age-related Hebrew and Greek words when translating them from original Manuscripts into the Latin Vulgate. He did this to support the doctrine of hell, which was a pagan belief that had already been embraced and established in the Roman Catholic Church by the time Jerome came to write the Latin Vulgate.
Hm...the Old Testament prophets were heretics. Jesus himself was a heretic. John Wycliffe and Martin Luther were heretics. Now Rob Bell is a heretic, hm? It's funny how pretty much every reformer EVER was labeled a heretic by whatever religious people were in charge at the time. The cycle never really ends, does it? xD
Good for you, Rob, sticking up for your church! I'm glad he's not letting the haters tear him down :)
Have never read his book, but I would say this. If it is not in agreement with the Bible - RUN! Lots of doctrines being taught from the Bible. In fact, the Bible says that doctrines of demons would be taught in in the last days. Not saying this man is doing that because I have never read his book or attended his church. However, seems to be lots of follks saying that he is teaching heresies. I would just encourage people to be careful about following any man.
Blasphemy is the working against the spirit of God? that doesn't sound like a correct statement? I can see why people follow Rob, especially when he appeals to them being victimised for being followers of his Mars Hill. A warning though, this is a similar arguement to that which Hitler made to the German people regarding the Jews.
@bocajjp1 well in the gospels when they mention the man the rich man that dies and goes to hell he said he saw Abraham and God but there was an eternal void he asked for help but it was not given why because hell is eternal seperation from God
