March 6, 2010. Old State House. Boston, Massachusetts. Edward Paine, merchant, summarizes the taxing authority of the British crown, both under English common law and the Massachusetts provincial charter. Parliament has the authority to regulate trade, but does not have taxing authority beyond the shores of England. The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770.
