  • why are the hands open like that?

  • This is Okinawan karate, not Japanese, which tends to mostly use seiken and shuto. When Funikoshi introduced karate to Japan after his demonstration in 1914, he did not include the traditional boshiken and nukite attacks, as they were considered "barbaric" in Japan. The open hand in ready stance is actually boshiken (where the thumb is the point of attack).

  • How long does it take to earn a black belt in Uechi Ryu Karate?

  • If that is the first question that comes to mind, you are on the wrong path. No-one in our dojo would consider that his or her goal, but if you want a number, I think it works out to a minimum of 5 years. Shihan requires a minimum attendance for each test, and testing is not only on form, but also oral questions and a reading requirement. The order of the moves is only the most basic part - technique and breathing become more and more important as you advance, as does mindset.

  • Great to see you are back uploading! Thanks!

  • It was a software issue I finally got worked out. More to come!
