Did you know the original Declaration of Independence was signed four years before the one that is celebrated on July 4th. A group of Appalachia Hill folk declared themselves independent from the British years before the rest of the nation. We explore the history of the Watauga association and the battle of Kings mountain. See how a loose band of hillbillies were really the first free settlement in the colonies.

  • My Grand Father is Colonel John Tipton his son's and brothers where over the mountian men. There sons did it agin in 1812. They dont like us.

  • Good report! I'm directly descended from Michael Hyder who was part of the Watauga settlement. He was advanced in years by the time of King's Mountain so he stayed at Watauga to ward off any attacks from the Cherokee.

  • You keep saying West Virginia. West Virginia didn't even exist back then.

  • I was unaware of this but now that i know but will forget it later when i get sober.

  • Ty very much, did not know that.

  • @ericstrattendgtmy I give Washington full credit for both Trenton and for walking away from power. Not much more, but that's enough for one lifetime.

    .

Would that he had given Hamilton the boot, the world would be a better place.

    .

"We don't belong there and should go home."

    .

Not "we", They. True, they should not be, and I'm sickened that my tax money pays for it.

  • @CurtHowland I don't believe Washington was an "idiot" considering Trenton and he did not take adavantage of his situation and take a title of King. Never the less Nathaniel Green and the rest realized that winning battles on your own turf wasn't nessessary, just ware down the will of Briton. Same as Charlie in Viet-nam or what we will get in Afganastan. We don't belong there and should go home.

  • Fascinating.
