Actually, scientists already have a very good understanding of such "mothering instincts."
While for many, training and experience also help make better mothers, in nature, there are also strong hormonal/chemicals --- like oxytocin, etc. --- that are released by helpless babies. And in most female animals, particularly those whose hormonal glands are actively producing receptors for such chemicals, most of them want to nurture helpless, crying babies, even if they're from a different species.
