Bendigo Chinese Association, Awakening of the Dragon 2010, Donation Dance

The Bendigo Chinese Association "Awakening of the Dragon " 2010. The most experienced and senior members of the Lion Team are chosen to display their skills and knowledge in this performance. This traditional performance is also referred to as "The picking of the green", the lions display their agility and liveliness by accomplishing the hardest of obstacles. The Poles or obstacles symbolize the mountain which the lions have to skilfully overcome in order to eat the Choi Chang (bok choy, or lettuce). The lions then spray the greens over the crowd, symbolically spreading good luck and prosperity. The donation blanket is then passed around the crowd, contributing all proceeds to the Bendigo Health a tradition dating back to the gold rush era.
