Appearing under the pseudonym Gustave Affeulpin in 1976, and coinciding with the inauguration of the Centre Beaubourg in Paris, Albert Meister's fictional text, "The so-called utopia of the centre beaubourg," imagines a radical libertarian space submerged beneath the newly erected centerpiece of French Culture.
"The so-called utopia of the centre beaubourg - An interpretation" is the first translation and publication of the text in English, a project undertaken by the artist Luca Frei as an attempt to both revitalize a significant cultural treatise and to reflect upon the subjective role of the artist in transferring ideas. The book was co-published in 2007 by Book Works and CASCO, Office for Art, Theory and Design, Utrecht.
This video documents a reading by Luca Frei of the book, "The so-called utopia of the centre beaubourg - An interpretation. The reading was organized in conjunction to the group exhibition "Archaeology of Longing" (September 20-November 9, 2008) curated by Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy and organized by Kadist Art Foundation in Paris, France. This same evening, two other performances took place: one by Emma Hedditch and another by Gérald Bloncourt.
