LAUSD Board Meeting April 14, 2009 - partial transcript:
"If you do what you are supposed to do today...You will be nailing another nail in the coffin of Public Education"
###
Almost 20 years ago to this day I was president of the Board and at that time we face a situation very similar to the one we face today. And we made drastic, dramatic cuts from which frankly this District has never recovered. You now sit in a situation facing exactly the same thing we did.
But I want to tell you something, if I had to do it again, I would not have done what I did. And let me tell you why. Let me tell you why.
Because since 1978 and Proposition 13 there has been amongst those people who do not care about the future of the children who attend a school district like ours an attempt to destroy Public Education in this state. They do it by strangling the funding, year after year after year.
I sat here and cut the best music program in America. It never came back, never came back. We had the most children in instrumental music in any city in the entire country and we laid off all those music teachers. We laid off the reading teachers. We laid off the PE teachers. We laid off the people who fixed the instruments. We laid off everybody and it never came back. It never came back.
If you do what you are supposed to do today. If you do the responsible thing today. You will be nailing another nail in the coffin of Public Education.
I am asking you to think about not being a part of the dismantling of Public Education in this state.
If you do what is expected of you, 20 years from now when you're sitting where I am, you will regret it, I promise you.
There are always other choices and I will regret to the day I die the choices I made 20 years ago.
the stupidest college students become ed majors -- why? -- because they are not smart enough to do anything that requires brains, such as engineering -- these stupid people are the reason public school students cannot read or write

Squandering money is a problem ,the truth of education is a very simple fact.
We have not excepted the fact that public education has reversed it's role as educating children in the basics of mathematics, reading ,science history, and slowly evolved these disciplines into being electives with sports becoming the primary focus. Any modern school is so sports oriented that it would blow your mind. This is the new sacred cow along with SUV's Beer, Viagra, Television, computers and computer games.

Bush, Cheney, and the miltiary pharma prison corporate complex squandered the money on pointless wars of agression to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan as well as other countries.

Ms Goldberg had years to fix things like this while she was a representative in Sacramento, but instead, just added to the out of control spending without expecting any accountable results. It is not just about spending,, but how that money is being spent. Throwing more money into the endless pit of education in California is what got us to this point NOW. The rules she made in California is a main cause of its demise now.

Thanks for posting this. I was living in CA when Jackie was President of the board and I remember watching those grueling budget cut meetings on the LAUSD cable access channel. It was devastating and riveting. Sad to see not much has changed.
