Original Byzantine chant, followed by my polyphonic setting,
of the Dismissal hymn for the time of Pentecost
(Απολυτίκιον της Πεντηκοστής - Apolytikion tis Pentikostis)
Performed by the dwsChorale.

(Note for any "purists" who might have preferred
the traditional chant alone:
Many 20th and 21st century Russian composers
are doing similar things to this, so these more complex
settings are not unknown in the Orthodox world.
I therefore just hope that choirs not only from the Greek and Russian
Orthodox traditions but also from other areas of the
Christian choral world will be interested in performing
this arrangement of this beautiful Byzantine chant)

Musicla scores of both this setting and my (more traditional) homophonic four part setting can be downloaded from:

  • the poliphonic form of the apolytikion is WRONG !!!!! the vyzantine music is not poliphonic!!!!

  • @GIALAKIASY Yes, I know that now and I did also write a homophonic version for the choir who asked me to write it. However, I like this polyphonic version, which was the original one I composed: I suppose you would call it a sort of cross-over, not quite Western Christian not quite Greek Orthodox, but a nice blend of the two..
