I guess I can understand but seriously, I think hats are less tacky than wigs? What does your husband do in terms of "reserving" for you? ;).

I'm an equal opportunity coverer! :) Whatever goes with my outfit that day is what I wear. In terms of what my husband reserves for me? His gaze...check out "why orthodox men don't wear wigs" on jewinthecitydotcom

I'm Jewish also, while I do understand why you and others wear wigs, it still seems kind of strange to me.If your hair is only for your husband...than why do some women cut it very short and then wear attractive wigs? The idea is to be attractive to and for your husband only so it just seems like wigs are like getting around the rules a bit.I was hoping you could give me a little more of your personal opinion.I am curious does all hair have to be covered?or just most, for scarves

    Shalom!

The idea is not to only be attractive to your husband. You can be attractive for yourself & the world! The idea is to have certain parts of yourself where no men can go past except that one special man ur married to. Think about a woman w/varicose veins and cellulite. Does she look better in spanx & a dress or naked? Jewish modesty isn't about looking ugly-it's about keeping certain parts private. In terms of how much to cover, diff opinions. My rabbis believe only a little can show.

And to the others asking whether wearing a wig is pointless IF the wig is attractive is irrelevant. I have beautiful hair, it's styled & coloured nicely. However I wear wigs most of the time & there is a radical difference between my own hair & my wigs. I look vastly different with/without so to say wearing an attractive wig defeats the purpose is a bit of an oxymoron if your natural hair is just as if not more attractive?

there are many rabbis who believe that wigs are OK. believe it started in the talmud. the biggest rabbi in recent times was the lubavitcher rebbe. if you look up "the lubavitcher rebbe on hair covering" by rivkah slonim on chabaddotorg you'll see one of the greatest rabbis of the previous generation thought wigs were the best way to cover. rabbis in my circles just believe it's a valid way to cover.

Covering hair is not about hiding beauty. Married women should look beautiful! Orthodox women cover their hair 2 keep it only for their husbands only but also 2 create a barrier between it and other men. A wig can accomplish this bc even though she looks beautiful she's aware that she's wearing a wig and that she's married which affects her behavior. Many women however, for your same concern prefer wearing scarves or hats instead of wigs, but that’s up to personal discretion.

It is def true that men want what they can’t get, but does that mean that its better for women to walk around naked than clothed? Certainly not.Women choose to hide certain parts of their body to keep them sacred &special & yes, often times, to signal their unavailability. While your concern is legit, it most certainly does not seem like a strong enough reason to be less modest. On top of that, actually physically seeing something and just imagining and wanting something are not nearly the same.

I don't consider myself Amish or Muslim modest but I do consider myself "Jewish modest." Fitted clothes, makeup, & jewelry are permitted acc. 2 Jewish law. The Bible encourages us to look beautiful (many women in the bible were described by their beauty!) within the standards of modesty. Looking beautiful and sexy are very different. It is true that unlike the Amish who veer far away from crossing that line, orthodox women often walk the tightrope between beautiful and sexy.
