This is a view into the the throat of a volcanic vent located on the floor of the Halema'uma'u pit crater. Halema'uma'u is located on the south end of the floor of the Kilauea Caldera on the island of Hawai'i. The lava lake in the video is about 400 feet across and 200-300 feet below the floor of Halema'uma'u. The camera is on the Kilauea Caldera floor at the rim of Halema'uma'u and the viewpoint is about 500 feet above the lava. Use headphones or a good sound system and listen for the surges and splashes of lava and also for the sounds of broken glass as parts of the vent's walls fall into the abyss.

  • Hypnotizing!

  • Drop the ring, Mr. Frodo!

  • Wow! I heard the obsidian breaking! I was making jewellery with obsidian today - it's from Queensland and it is streaked with black and brown but otherwise translucent. It's a lovely stone. This is great, Robert. I envy you getting so close.
