This video illustrates the serratus exercise on the foam roller.

The serratus exercise on the foam roller targets the back extensors, the serratus to maintain scapular stabilization, transversus abdominus, rectus abdominus and obliques. Focus on pulling elbows toward ribcage, preventing overextension of the thoracic and lumbar spine.

  • The serratus antertior has it's origin on the lateral ribs and insertion on the medial border of the scapulae. It acts mainly on the position of the shoulder blade keeping it from winging. It protracts the scapulae. The exercise shown does not isolate the serratus. This is not to say that it is not a good exercise but i would not categorize it as a serratus anterior isolation.

  • This position would allow only minimal scapula protraction/retraction in a non-functional plane which is essential for proper serratus anterior training. She's actually almost in a good position for training lower fibres of trapezius.

  • @booyakashaful If the exercice is done properly, it is actually working on the serratus. You just have to intentionally squeez your shoulderblades down and in. It is hard to explain but if you try it, you'll know what I mean and undertsnad the way it works. But as you and drmark10 say, this is probably not the best exercise for isolating serratus anterior.
