From a conservation perspective, biodiversity and protection of natural resources are covered in the National Organic Program's (NOP) regulations. Biodiversity conservation is part of the definition of organic farming, and the NOP requires that farmers and ranchers maintain or improve their soil, water, wetlands, woodlands, and wildlife. In addition, seven other NOP regulations relate to biodiversity and natural resource conservation. This webinar explores NRCS Conservation Practice Standards that help operators meet these NOP requirements, including those protecting resources, providing conservation buffers, and supporting wildlife habitat. It includes a discussion of the Live Earth Farm's conservation efforts near Watsonville, California. The webinar was funded by an NRCS conservation innovation grant and broadcast September 27, 2012, by the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT). Participants include Jo Ann Baumgartner, Wild Farm Alliance; Jim Riddle, University of Minnesota Southwest Research and Outreach Center; Tom Broz, Live Earth Farm; and Jeff Schahczenski, NCAT.
