This song was written following John Lennon's death in 1980, and is about handgun law in the USA. The media soul searching that happens there each time someone is assasinated, or each time a school shooting happens seems misdirected when access to guns is so easy. The per capita rates of gun death in the USA are many times higher than other countries, and stricter law would surely change that. Yet this remains a controversial position for politicians, who consider it a 'no win' area and shy away from it. Those who do propose a ban on handguns are accused of naivity, and the 'right to bear arms' paragraph in the US constitution, though its true intention is debatable, is routinely cited by a powerful gun lobby. Yet it has been shown in the aftermath of so many high profile shootings how easily guns were obtained by unstable people. Perhaps John Lennon would have lived to make much more wonderful music if that access had been properly difficult. Is that really so naive a statement, or just common sense?

so remind me again, how many were killed in Rwanda with the primary tool used to cause the deaths being the machete? Guns aren't the problem, the hearts of people are the problem. People who want to kill will just find another way if you take the guns away. MS 13 for instance favors other weapons. Taking the guns won't solve the problem, showing people love and caring for them will help more.

Thanks for this video. I have certainly seen the light. If I am every confronted by an armed assailant, particularly in my home, I will invite them to disarm and sing "Kumbya" or "Imagine". That should do the trick, and disarm the situation readily enough, don't you think?

To the likes of "AR15Militant" -- I despise the boneheaded interpretation of the Second Amendment as shat out by right-wing fascists. In that Amendment is the tempering phrase "well-regulated militia." Adult white men with enough teeth to tear cartridge paper were the "militia."

Firearms have evolved these past 200 years. So has the phrase "well-regulated." So why do so many Americans shoot one another?

If it's your business to know and if you're any good at your job, you ought to know that that in 1997, a major law resulted in the confiscation and destruction of almost all privately owned handguns in the UK. You should also know that all crime rates in the UK since that time have risen significantly...and in most cases, are higher than USA crime rates. Only murder and rape rates are still higher in the USA....but the murder rate in the UK has risen 350% since the 1997 law passed !! Do U know

Yes they did .... do a quick Google search on UK gun laws 1997 ..... and you'll get more detail. But virtually all handguns (cartridge guns larger than.22 calibre) were made illegal, confiscated and destroyed. And the crime rates in the UK have skyrocketed since. UK has higher crime rates than the USA for all crimes except for rape and murder. And for those 2 crimes, the rate in the UK has risen terribly since 1997.
