  • Seems so funny nowadays that people got so bent out of shape over this. Now, that we have people walking up to accept awards drunk, stoned, swearing and using the "F" word (to the point where they now frequently air live awards shows on a ten-second delay) , this all seems rather inocuous, doesn't it?

  • It was the 70s, I was a goofy teenage boy, and I had a huge crush on Helen Reddy!

Her looks, her voice, and her strong attitude made me helplessly in love. If you're reading this, Helen, I may never get to meet you but I'll always be a fan!

In response I can say it's a good thing people don't get upset every time we refer to a boat or ship as "she" (which is in EVERY case). But that's the difference between men and women I guess. But it DOES get rather old when someone absolutely beats you over the head with this crap. That's when it goes too far and only makes you look like an ass. People tired quickly of this stuff.

  • @DonGormleone I think that was her point, that God isn't male or female...but people always say He.

  • Ofcourse she would say that because she was standing up for Women's Rights. I loved her and the song and I am a MAN. Go Helen and Go ALL Women.

  • God is not a man or a woman, neither male or female. I understand that she's trying to be controversial, but I think calling God a "she" just sounds childish.

  • I remember when this speech aired, including my mother and aunts in their thick stockings and hairnets SCREECHING that Helen and all of "her kind" would all be destroyed at Aarmageddon.

  • It was definitely a sign of that particular period that assigning a female gender to a deity would ruffle feathers. I happen to like "I Am Woman" (& I'm a dude).

  • Makes sense that if there is a god it would be a female. After all, females bear life and not males! Helen rocks!

  • Bravo Helen! Also, that has got to be one of the shortest and to the point acceptance speeches I have ever heard.
