PlusAP Campaign MinuteAP Campaign MinuteThe Associated PressHere's the latest from the campaign trail for Thursday, June 5th: Obama stumps in rural Virginia; Obama makes DNC Dean decision; Clinton may retain delegates; McCain heads to Florida. (June 5)This is AP Campaign Minute: Now the presumptive democratic nominee for president - Barack Obama is trying to win back some of Clinton country. Obama campaigned today in a part of rural Virginia where Hillary Rodham Clinton had done well in the primary. Democrats consider the state a swing state this year -- The last time Democrats won Virginia in a presidential election was 1964. Obama is keeping Howard Dean at the helm of the Democratic National Committee, while bringing in one of his top strategists to oversee the party's operations. The campaign also announced that the DNC will no longer accept donations from lobbyists and political action committees, to comply with Obama's campaign policy. Clinton is not quite off the stage yet. While she plans to endorse Obama this Saturday -- she is also looking at ways to retain her delegates - a move that could put pressure on Obama to embrace either her health care plan -- or perhaps promise her with a position in his administration. John McCain was campaigning in another possible swing state today -- Florida. McCain addressed the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and press association. His speech comes as his campaign is reporting a pick-up of 21-and-a-half million dollars in May -- that's McCain's best month of fundraising. ___ ___, The Associated Press, with AP Campaign Minute.
