Both the trains were running on a 20 metre high railway viaduct between the cities of Hangzhou and Fuzhou when the trains collided.
At roughly 20:00 CST, CRH train D3115 (CHR1-046B), from Hangzhou to Fuzhou South lost power; attributed to a lightning strike, before coming to a halt over a viaduct. Shortly afterwards, CRH train D301 (CRH2-139E), running from Beijing South to Fuzhou, rear-ended the stationary D3115.
The first four coaches of D301 and the fifteenth and sixteen coaches of D3115 derailed; the two coaches of D3115 fell off the viaduct. One came to rest on the ground below, while one came to rest vertically, one end on the ground and one end leant against the viaduct.
