  • I planted a 1/2 acre of Shot Plot today. Soil was disced and fertilized at the correct rate. I put out and the seed and covered it with my harrow drag. I put it in a new area and mixed some winter rye and some Biologic brassica in with it...I will put out an update when it comes up. Supposed to get some rain tonight .

  • Never had much luck in the shade myself........not sure what to plant.

  • No..it is something different called Shot Plot. Throw and Grow comes up nice too...but it has a lot more of the rye grass than Shot Plot. Shot Plot is pretty much all turnips...it grows well, but I can't get my deer to eat it up here.

  • @hunterjaymiller the Alabama agent has a video on here and according to him, deer eat what grows naturally in the area.. when introducing a new food source, deer tend to be finicky the first year or 2 it is planted.. after that, they can acquire a taste for it... so if they dont eat it this year, planting it again next year maybe the trick..

  • @chosen1atWork I planted it three years in a row. Last year it looked like something out of hunting show. I even sent pictures to a seed company of the plot. They told me my deer just must be stupid :)

Keep in mind this plot is in an agricultural area. I am surrounded by thousands of acres of corn and soybeans.I just think the turnips can't compete. I planed almost an acre of field corn by hand this year. I will put up a video of that soon.

  • @hunterjaymiller after the 3rd year, i would agree with you. The trend in food plots is to grow mixed fodder for the deer to eat in late summner. from what i have seen on youtube, even in shade, soybeans are good for fall as they eat the plants. If I had a plot, late summer I would mix together a little corn, soybeans, spinich, squash, clover, cabbage, peas, oats and rye for a smorgasboard. along with a bank of manue for mushrooms. Fresh greens can compete with dry farm fields.

  • do you know any low light seeds that will work for a food plot. my area is a bit shady

  • great plot, is this a throw and grow or no?
