...Meanwhile the atheist physicalists (although they're in reaction against Descartes) are still Cartesians themselves, since they view the body as a kind of meat-machine. They can't see the Aristotelean distinction between material soul (in the sense of an animate substance which activates matter and confers upon it an identity) and machine (whose form is imposed in it externally and exists properly in the mind of the machinist, rather than the thing itself).
