It would be interesting to see if the data could be retrieved with no foreknowledge of the format, just a cassette.

There were systems that did this in the 90's. I know there was one that was big in the ex-soviet states around that time. Why? It was dead cheap and held hundreds of megabytes on a standard VHS tape using a standard VCR many people already owned.

About 25 years ago there was a data backup system that saved megs of data to VHS.
