After news that the deficit for fiscal year 2009 (which runs through Sept. 30) surpassed $1 trillion last month and may reach $2 trillion, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland puts some perspective on exactly how unimaginably big these numbers are.

  • sorry I mean 140 billion miles.

  • OK

    million = $1,000,000

    billion = $1,000,000,000

    trillion = $1,000,000,000,000

    $1trillion is 20 people with Bill Gates net worth. So $11 trillion is 220 Bill Gates.

    It could also get you either:

    485 million Chevy Camero's (or enough gas for one of them to travel 140 million miles e.g. the Sun and half way back)

    55 million family homes in Atlanta, 22 million modern family apts in Downtown LA or 183,333 Beverly Hills mansions.

    The entire countries grocery bills for the next 10 years.

  • We need to wake up and realize how out of control our government is. Mr. Westmoreland was trying to explain just how much a million, billion, and trillion is.

    We hear the numbers all of the time, it does'nt sound like that much untill we break it down like that and say "SHOOT! WE DON'T NEED TO BE SPENDING LIKE THAT!" I am with Mr. Westmoreland 100%

  • adamreuter You are a dumb shit!!

  • Represent Lynn Represent!!

  • For a One Minute Speech I like the analogy, because he only had 1 minute to explain an exponentially rising deficit and debt that increases every second. However, if it was a Special Order Speech, then I would not concur with the delivery of the message. Also, I never said anything about it being the most effective.

  • And you think the most effective way to do so is by explaining in time? Considering he is talking about $ don't you think he should have been using an analogy that involves $?

  • Hes simply explaining to the Speaker that most uneducated voters dont have the capacity to correlate the difference between billions & trillions Most do think that a trillion is simply a lot, thus, not knowing the true economical value of it (National Debt) and how it impacts the economy. Its just a number to the common American voter and they have no idea the large substantial variance of the two.

  • So you're saying that a trillion is a lot? OK. Thanks for the help. Im glad you're really working hard in D.C.
