Boeing has just released this promotional video for the YAL-1 Airborne Laser, a modified 747-400 that is being developed to shoot down ballistic missiles during the first few minutes of flight.

The Soviet Union also developed laser weapons airborne.And also without some shocking results - a program in which a laser set up on the IL-76 by early 1990 curtailed, though at first she and ahead of American. This is not fighting laser but lab.He not took part in the war!

Second:

Largest distance,in testing time, between the 747-400F aircraft and the target to about 100 miles (read such Reuters)

First off:

If you were erudite, then you know the Laser beam does not smite the target, but heated shell.It takes time.

While you heat the shell,possible innumerable way, raise disturbance.It's the same,as every rocket have Penetration aid and Decoy ;)

Second:

Laser beam, range of operation,is limited.Air defence system,operating range much more as range of Laser. Air defence system,first take down your Laser,with plane ;)
