It wasn't that they tried to create their own stories (although their "original" movies are more disappointing than the ones based on pre-existing fairytales/stories). There was also the issue, as you said, that they never bothered to improve the animation technique and they got held back by the need to create new dolls and tried to follow girl steryotypes (like all girls liking pink fairies and mermaids). Not to mention the overrepetition of themes like shyness and dreams.
