At around 11:45PM a Tornado Warning was issued for Northern portions of Shawnee County. Sirens in both activation zones sounded the 3 minute alert. Sirens heard include a Model 5, Thunderbolt 1000 and 1 possibly 2 2001s.

  • How many model 5s are still left in Shawnee County? I just love the winddown of those old sirens. They go on forever.

  • Three. I know of at least two that were up, but was removed some years ago. I can still hear that same Model 5 heard at my new house, but not as loud as I did at that house:(. Kinda sad becasue it was the siren I heard growing up most of my life.

  • That was a scary evening. Salina had some tornado damage. I had to go down to the basement twice that evening for tornado warnings. What kind of siren is that I'm hearing throughout the video? Sounds like a 2001. I live a couple blocks away from Meadowlark Ridge Elementary School in Salina. And when that thunderbolt 1000T siren goes off, it's pretty loud--I can hear it well from my house. Nice vid, btw.

  • Main siren heard is a Model 5, then a Thunderbolt 1000 and a 2001.

  • That was the same tornado that ripped through Chapman/Manhattan. Wasn't it? Something the neighbors don't want to wake up to in the middle of the night.

  • The same storm that went through Chapman/Manhattan was supposed to go thru Northern Shawnee County (thus the Tornado Warning and Sirens) but took a turn North-ward and hit Soilder, KS.

  • That is sad. I sure hope in the near future that they will come up with a new line of civil defense sirens such as the Thunderbolts or 2001--just a lower pitch. With all the natural disasters occuring in the near future, I strongly feel that is is high demand--that is if they can ever find the funding to do so.

  • great vid!!!

  • Hard to believe this all happened just one day (or should I say 15 minutes) away from my 30th birthday!!! (June 12)

  • Agreed. I love listening to the different pitches and intervals of the tornado sirens. I am musically inclined, btw. I had a theory instructor at WSU who said that was his favorite sound in the whole wide world. Sounds kind of erie, but interesting.
