Volkswagen Motorsport's Sebastien Ogier has described the accident that put him and co-driver Julien Ingrassia out of Rallye Monte-Carlo on Thursday afternoon as the biggest of his career.

Ogier was in sixth overall, having run as high as fourth, in his Super 2000-specification Skoda Fabia when he crashed at an estimated 160kph on day two's final stage. Both crew were taken to hospital in Valence for precautionary checks and while advances in rally car safety saved both from serious injury, Ingrassia reported bruising to an arm.

"That was the biggest accident of my career, we were lucky that it wasn't worse," said Ogier, who is tackling all 13 rounds of this year's WRC in tandem with developing Volkswagen's new Polo R WRC ahead of its debut in 2013. "I really felt at home in the car. Our speed was very good. The difficult conditions were perfect for us, as we could almost keep pace with the WRC category."

Ingrassia added: "We tried to cut the corner slightly, the car was launched upwards as a result and at such a high speed we had no chance of keeping the car under control. I bruised my arm slightly on the impact, but luckily nothing appears to be broken."

Despite their premature exit, Volkswagen Motorsport boss Kris Nissen praised Ogier and Ingrassia for the pace they had showed against more powerful World Rally Car machinery.

"We are extremely happy that Sebastien and Julien are in good health," said Nissen. "Obviously it's a great shame that the two will be unable to celebrate reaching the finish in Monaco, especially as Sebastien had driven incredibly well up to that point. His speed was amazing on the opening stages. This proves that we have signed in Ogier a driver with great potential. We look forward to the other rallies with these two."

Volkswagen's second driver, Kevin Abbring, is 12th overall after 13 stages. The Dutchman is celebrating his 23rd birthday today.
