The Dallas Museum of Art in Texas is currently hosting a retrospective of the career of J. M. W. Turner, considered by many one of the greatest landscape painters in the history of art. The exhibit will travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art later this year. VOA's Carolyn Turner took in the more than 145 paintings and watercolors during the exhibition's stop in Washington.

Painting should leave the the viewer blown and gasping for air, If it doesn't it is not good art.

Completely awe-inspiring. Thank you. My favorite painter! He was a prodigy, did you know? Painted when he was a boy. There's a great documentary on him and Caravaggio well worth seeing available at Netflix. I love the melding of what seems to me a variety of schools of art: realism, surrealism (before its time), classicism, romanticism, and pure larger-than-life-ness. Amazing.

These paintings appear in pristine condition, for the most part. They have been lovingly cared for, and it shows. The internet images of his works do not begin to approach what they truly are- some of the greatest paintings ever produced.
