Commodore Amiga classic from 1993 by Electronic Arts (first released on the Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System and Super Nintendo in 1992).

Desert Strike is the first title in the "Strike Series" (Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Soviet Strike, Nuclear Strike) and is based on a fictional conflict inspired by the Gulf War: a year after the Gulf War, General Ibn Kilbaba takes over an Arab Emirate and threatens the world to start World War III. You, as a pilot of an AH-64A Apache helicopter, have the mission to prevent this by accomplishing certain objects like destroying tactical targets (power plants, radar dishes, airfields,...) and rescuing MIAs.

If you have no problem with the american-flavored scenario, this game is just great. The interface is helpful and easy to understand/use, the objectives are challenging and yet fair. The only negative thing to mention might be the auto-aim, which often chooses the wrong of two nearby standing targets, often resulting in a rocket fired at a tent. Besides that, Desert Strike is a nice action-packed game with the right amount of tactic elements, nice cutscenes, music and sound effects.

This video features the first two objectives of the first level.

PS: Sorry for the bad quality of the video but the emulator and recording software had some problems with the switching ingame-resolutions. Too bad :/

  • This looks like the ultimate version of Desert Strike. The PC version has a very annoying sound effect for the chopper's blades and the visuals are much better than the SNES/Megadrive versions.

Time to get an Amiga emulator I think :)

  • You're right, although I have to apologize for the bad quality of the video :(

But I think/hope everyone here on Youtube knows that actual gameplay DOES look better =)

  • this is where it started, but nuclear strike was my favorite... anyone up to the task of putting online a play-through? thanks a lot!

  • Amiga Longplay 218 is all about Desert Strike (over 3 hours to watch oO).

  • How do you emulate amiga games to work on vist`? Really miss theese classic games. Also the point'n click adventures...

  • I think WinUAE is vista compatible.

  • The Amiga version is the best one of the bunch IMO, from what I remember the Megadrive version ran a little bit faster than on my old A600, but the Amiga versions's graphics were better overall and it also has better sound and that fantastic intro sequence with some top music!

  • Now this is a fun game! Nowdays they would put everything in 3d, give us "the largerst game world ever made" and other senseless stuff and kill the game. Oh 90's please come back :(
