Jarders18 is right. No matter how many times Desmond keeps trying to save Charlie, as Ms. Hawkings says, "the universe unfortunately has a way of course correcting." Charlie will die no matter what, and he decided the best way to go is the route where Claire and Aaron get off the island.

thats not the point is it. Charlies knows he has to die to save claire and arron and if it dosent drown desmond is going to have to save him everyday and eventually fail
