The Arvada Center was one of only 15 regional theaters across the country to get the rights to produce "Les Miserables". The musical is a coveted and respected production. We're following its progress and we begin with auditions.
Always interesting to see behind the scenes and auditions. I got to see the actor they did chose to play Valjean(Randal Keith), play Valjean in the national tour(he may have been one the director mentions that holds the record for playing Valjean, I am not sure). This video made me think of how it would have been interesting to see the audition tapes of some of my favorite Les Mis actors when they first auditions for their roles.
It is true that Valjean's role is tough, but just because of that high B DOES NOT mean it has widest vocal range ever. For example, what about Javert's low F in "Confrontation"? That low F is REALLY hard for male singers to sing it RICH and BEAUTIFUL too. Or maybe Enjolras' huge, big, ultra powerhouse singing ALL THE TIME? Singing in THAT big voice in the entire role can be even harder than singing a high B as Valjean.
