Is there any adhesive involved in this process? If so, how do you apply the adhesive? Or is it simply the heat that binds the gold to the leather?

Sorry for the late response on this. Yet, the foil that was used in this particular video is a genuine 23k gold sandwiched between a thin layer of clear mylar, and a heat activated adhesive layer. Most artificial metallic foils are constructed in a similar fashion. With a little bit of practice many different types of blocking foils can be applied this way...
