The traditional version of this song goes back to the Jacobite Risings in Scotland (16881746). It was rewritten by Robert Burns in about 1791, and it is his version that is normally sung these days. The melody comes from a song called "My Love's in Germany" by Hector MacNeill.

William Donaldson wrote an excellent analysis of the Burns version of the song, which, he says, "deals with the human misery lurking behind political slogans and begins with a bold challenge to the legitimists."

The song has been recorded by many artists, including The Johnstons (1969) and The Corries (1970). Billy Bragg recorded it with new lyrics referring to "Thatcherites" on his 1996 EP, "Bloke on Bloke."

It is sung here by Catriona Mortensen at a session of the Hong Kong Folk Society at The Canny Man in Wanchai.

  • True, Geoff. I hope you detected the ironic tone in my reply!

  • I stand corrected, Raymond. In this morally debased country we try to get away with it by speaking with our tongues in our cheeks. I forget that the same doesn't work in print!

  • You're welcome.

  • Geoff, I don't allow sexist comments on this channel. Haven't you seen my song about the importance of being politically correct? It's here: /watch?v=usbS2pIxJco
