The 6th Annual Henry Steele Commager lecture "On Higher Education" is presented by Amherst College President Anthony W. Marx. Marx is an internationally recognized scholar who has written 3 books on nation building, particularly in S. Africa, but also in US, Brazil and Europe. He founded the Columbia Urban Ed. Prog. A public school teacher recruitment and training partnership. In the 1980's he helped found Khanya College, a S. African secondary school that helped prepare more than 1,000 black students for university. He is a published author with dozens of articles and 3 books. Marx has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the National Humanities Center, the Howard Foundation and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation. He attended Wesleyan, Yale and Princeton.
