The largest of the toothed whales, sperm whales range throughout most of the ocean, but are concentrated in feeding areas with steep drop-offs. Able to dive over 2500 meters for well over 1 hour, sperm whales spend relatively little time at the surface. This mother and calf were slowly swimming along the surface, spending 10 minutes or so together before the mother went deep, probably in search of squid to feed upon. She will descend into the darkness, using her echolocation, a series of clicking noises, to find her prey.

  • To all the IDIOTS out there: the Japanese don't hunt sperm whales. Try doing some research before you go and show the world that YOU are naive infantile idiots.
