Rep. Gordon Touts Importance Of NASA, STEM Education Initiatives. In an article for the Tennessean (11/22, 148K), US Rep. Bart Gordon (D) wrote, "Tennessee Tech University is hosting a live conversation between more than 120 students and NASA astronauts" on the International Space Station, during which students "ranging from kindergarten to college age" will have the opportunity to ask astronauts questions. Gordon touts his role in arranging the event, which he describes as "part of a larger, ongoing effort I've been working on to promote the importance of strengthening education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM fields, as well as highlight the impact that NASA advances have had on our everyday lives." Increased STEM education efforts, Gordon wrote, are important for creating a workforce that can compete in an increasingly globalized market. NASA, meanwhile, is an important employer, and its technologies "strengthen our economy and also help to maintain America's competitive edge in the global marketplace," Gordon writes.
