I do have one more series of videos ready to post... and this is it! Probably going to slow updates to one every two days until I have more in my buffer, etc... but yeah, now it is time for... Battletoads! I had been wanting to get this one recorded for quite awhile... and oh how I tried. This is one of those games that will still take me many tries to beat it each time... and the only sure-fire way to make beating the game a lot easier, is to do well in stage 2. I will explain how that works in a moment...

This game is basically a hybrid platformer and beat-em-up for the NES, that has a bit of a reputation for being brutally hard... but still fun. This is one of those extremely hard games that actually does everything from a game design perspective RIGHT! Most other popular brutally hard games... such as Ninja Gaiden... are riddled with flaws and terrible problems that make the game artificially harder because its programmed poorly. With Battletoads, the main programming issues and artificial difficulty stuffs is exclusive to 2-player. No matter what you do, you can hit your team mate in two player, and the second last stage is glitched so Player 2 MUST lose all their lives and Player 1 beat most of the level by themself in order to beat the game. Player 2 can still return for the rest of the game if they have a continue left, though.

More about the stages in this one, though.... The first stage is just what you would expect it to be... a simple intro stage with little difficulty to it. This one is just a fun little stage to pound away at everything and just have fun with the ridiculous finishers the toads pull off. There is still one trick to watch out for, though... The two dragon enemies in this stage can grab you, and slam you into the ground for an instant kill. However, if you whack them out of the sky, you can climb on them and use them as your minion! Neat! The boss of this stage is pitiful, but quite fun.

Stage 2... this is the important stage. In this stage, you are on a rope, slowly descending into a pit filled with crows and other various enemies and traps. The crows are what are important... you can keep smacking these things over and over until you get a 1-up from them. If you want to be able to beat this game without being absurdly skillful and having it ridiculously memorized, then you simply MUST get MANY 1-ups from the crows in this stage! I find it easier to repeatedly hit the crows once you get the sword weapon since it increases the range of your attack, but getting many 1-ups is vital. I would not even continue my run attempt in these recordings unless I got at least 6 lives from stage 2. This time around things went particularly well, so I was actually quite confident that I would beat the game this time!

Enjoy!~

  • Holy crap! How many lives did you get? You must've gotten at least 10 or something.

  • Ah, Battletoads. Own this game myself. Never beat it. And I did use the Crows/Ravens on stage 2 to get 1-ups aswell.

    Got to stage 8.

  • you are a freak of nature, i remember playing this game when i was 5 and i had to come back years later at the age 18 to beat this game and you make it look so effortless

  • Have you played Ninja Gaiden or let alone, BEATEN THEM? While it is a popular brutally difficult game, I wouldn't say that it has alot of flaws and problems that make harder. Sure, it has it's re-spawning enemies, but as most people would know, alot of games have re-spawning enemies. The only problem they have with them, in my opinion is the over-the-top and masochistic final bosses that Ninja Gaiden has to offer.

  • What website did u get this game from because the game i have glitches a ton and makes the bomb level impossible ( I'm playing with the JNES emulator and I cannot remember the site I got Btoads from)

  • Best juggling ever XD! You should get into fighting games! X3

  • You are pro in this way i can get up to 3 lives in lev2.

If you kill very fast first 2 monsters in ragnarok's canyon and run fast to the right side you can open warp gate.

  • All I have to say is poor crows, poor poor crows

  • Trivia: This is one of the few games to have a boss with 2nd person camera view!

  • PinkKitty, I just watched this entire playthrough. Thanks so much for posting this. It was really entertaining to watch with all the commentary boxes and such.

This is one of my favorite NES games.
